In China, very small aperture terminal (VSAT) communication service refers to the transmission of voice, data, multimedia communication, and other services between the center station and the VSAT terminal users (earth stations) within the country, and between VSAT terminal users, by using a satellite transponder and managed and controlled by the VSAT communication system center station.

Overview of VSAT

VSAT stands for "Very Small Aperture Terminal" and is also known as a "Satellite Communication Earth Station". It is a satcom communication system developed in the mid-1980s. VSAT is widely used in news, weather, civil aviation, civil defence, banking, oil, seismic and military sectors, as well as in remote areas. A typical VSAT network can accommodate 200-500 stations and has various applications such as broadcast, point-to-point, interactive and collection.

Uses of VSAT

  • To promote satellite TV broadcasting and satellite TV education and to transmit broadcasting, television signals and commercial television signals. This method is particularly effective for the material and spiritual construction of remote areas in China.

  • For financial and securities systems to dynamically track and manage market conditions, significantly shortening the turnover cycle. The Shenzhen Stock Exchange Trading System uses VSAT systems to communicate with customers from all over the world.

  • Used for the management of water conservancy construction, monitoring hydrological changes, and preventing and reducing losses from natural disasters. VSAT systems designed by VSAT suppliers can transmit information obtained from meteorological satellites, oceanographic satellites, resources satellites and ground detection stations promptly. Using VSAT, communication, telex and telegram services between any two places can be easily carried out, saving money and time.

  • Used in military applications. In the Gulf War of 1991, multinational forces used VSATs for a large number of mobile communications, even equipping each soldier with it.

  • Used for emergency communication and communication in remote areas. For natural disasters or emergencies, VSAT is the most convenient communication backup system, for example, the 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake.
